President Xi Jinping has remarked that corruption in China remains serious and multifaceted, referring to it as a “tumour,” and has warned senior Communist Party of China (CPC) officials to “exercise stronger self-discipline.”

Xi recommended improved anti-corruption efforts to ensure that officials do not have the “audacity, opportunity, or willingness to participate in wrongdoing.”

On Friday, Xi urged a complete triumph in the anti-corruption campaign when speaking at a group study session of the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau on enhancing anti-corruption capacity.

“The fight against corruption is a key political conflict that the party cannot afford to lose and should never lose because it affects the people,” Xi remarked, according to state-run media.

In an uncommon caution to senior officials, Xi stated that cadres in higher positions and with more authority must show stronger self-control.

Members of the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau, Xi added, “in particular must hold themselves to the greatest standards of self-discipline, and take the lead among all party members in obeying the party’s dos and don’ts.”

Soon after becoming CPC General Secretary in 2012, China’s President initiated an anti-corruption campaign. More than a million officials have been imprisoned or detained as part of the crackdown that began shortly after he took control in 2012.
