TS Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has accused the Netherlands of “patronizing” his nation after the Dutch ambassador to the United Kingdom publicly chastised New Delhi for voting against UN General Assembly resolutions on the Ukraine conflict.
“Please do not patronize us, Ambassador.” “We know what to do,” Tirumurti tweeted on Thursday to Dutch envoy Karel van Oosterom.
Tirumurti’s tweet was in reaction to van Oosterom’s (now-deleted) admonition that India “should not have withdrawn” from voting on Russia and the Ukrainian war, and that it should “respect the UN Charter.”
Despite repeated demands and pressure from the West to join the West in isolating Russia over the Ukraine conflict, New Delhi has been hesitant to terminate relations with Moscow.
This year, India abstained on a number of votes and resolutions at the UN General Assembly, including a move to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council over allegations of civilian killings.
