Russia announced on Wednesday that it has successfully test-fired its Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, a new addition to its nuclear arsenal that President Vladimir Putin claims will give Moscow’s adversaries pause.
The missile was launched from Plesetsk in the country’s northwest and hit targets in the Kamchatka peninsula in the far east, according to Putin, who was told by the military on television.
“The new complex has the highest tactical and technological features and is capable of defeating all modern anti-missile defense systems; it has no counterparts in the world and will not for a long time,” Putin stated.
“This genuinely unique weapon will boost our armed forces’ fighting potential, dependably safeguard Russia’s security from external threats, and provide food for thought for those who try to attack our country in the midst of frenzied threatening rhetoric.”
According to the US, the Sarmat is a new heavy intercontinental ballistic missile that Russia plans to deploy with 10 or more warheads on each missile. The Congressional Research Service is a government-funded organization that does research on
